Advanced Rejuvenation
Sciton BroadBand Light for visible sun damage, brown spots and facial redness. A photofacial tailored to your skin, with a clear explanation of what to expect afterward.

BBL HERO (High Energy Rapid Output) is a broadband light platform developed by Sciton. It uses pulses of filtered light rather than a laser beam. Melanin in brown spots and oxyhemoglobin in visible vessels absorb selected wavelengths; the resulting heat targets the areas of unwanted colour. Surface cooling is used during treatment.
At Topaz, BBL HERO is considered for selected visible pigment concerns such as sunspots and uneven tone, but not for melasma. Visible capillaries and facial redness are also concerns we discuss. Not every brown or red mark has the same cause, so treatment settings are chosen for your skin, not a protocol template.
We do not offer treatments on autopilot. Before any BBL HERO session at Topaz, we assess your skin carefully, including your Fitzpatrick skin type, any active conditions, and what you are genuinely hoping to achieve. You will understand what we are doing and why: what the light targets and what to expect in the days after. If it is not the right fit for your skin, we will tell you.
HERO means High Energy Rapid Output. The platform delivers up to three times the power and four times the speed of traditional BBL, with controlled surface cooling. Light delivery over the full face can take approximately five minutes; assessment, preparation and finishing care are additional parts of the 60-minute visit. The treatment time depends on the area and settings.
The focus is the appearance of selected pigmentation, redness and visible vessels, with suitability assessed in person. A cosmetic assessment does not diagnose a skin condition or replace medical care.
For a broader comparison of pigmentation approaches, read our sun damage and pigmentation guide.

BBL HERO may be considered for clients concerned with the appearance of sun-related pigmentation, visible redness, or uneven tone when the provider confirms that light treatment is appropriate. It can appeal to people who want a technology-based option and are prepared to follow sun-avoidance and aftercare instructions carefully.
Suitability depends on more than the visible concern. Recent tanning, photosensitizing medication, active infection, certain health conditions, pregnancy, and other procedures can affect timing or eligibility. This page is educational and not a substitute for an individual consultation. Seek medical assessment for changing, suspicious, or unexplained lesions before cosmetic light treatment.
Topaz does not offer BBL for melasma. Discuss a consultation-led alternative rather than booking light treatment on the basis of a photograph.
We review skin tone, current skin conditions, sun exposure, previous reactions and relevant history. The treatment area and concerns are agreed before light delivery.
The skin is prepared and protective eyewear is used. We explain the sensation, selected settings and expected skin response.
Pulses of BroadBand Light are delivered over the planned area. Melanin and oxyhemoglobin absorb selected wavelengths, allowing treatment of pigment and visible vascular concerns while surface cooling supports comfort.
We check the skin response and explain gentle care and sun protection. The 60-minute booking covers the whole visit, not 60 minutes of light exposure.

Good to know
Choose a topic to learn what to expect before and after your appointment.
Treated pigment can temporarily darken before gradually flaking away over approximately seven to ten days. Changes in visible colour develop over time, and more than one session may be appropriate. Response depends on your skin, concern, treatment area and settings; a guaranteed degree of rejuvenation is not promised.
An initial course of four to six sessions, commonly around three to four weeks apart, may be discussed for suitable concerns. Maintenance is planned separately according to skin response, sun exposure and goals; the number and spacing are not the same for everyone.
BBL is not universally downtime-free. Temporary redness, warmth, swelling and darkening of treated pigment may occur. Recovery varies; discuss important events and sun exposure before booking. Contact the studio for unexpected or persistent reactions.
Topaz generally advises avoiding tanning and unprotected sun exposure for approximately two weeks before BBL. Tell the practitioner about medications, supplements, topical actives and recent procedures. Follow your individual pre-care instructions, and seek medical assessment for suspicious or changing lesions before cosmetic treatment.
Use gentle products, avoid heat and friction while the skin feels reactive, and follow strict daily sun protection. Do not pick at darkened pigment or irritated areas. Postpone strong actives and other procedures until your provider says the skin has recovered.
Topaz generally advises sun avoidance for approximately two weeks afterward, alongside consistent sun protection. Your individual instructions may vary with your skin and treatment settings.
Not sure which treatment to choose?
No. BBL stands for BroadBand Light. This Sciton platform uses filtered pulsed light for a photofacial, rather than a single laser wavelength.
Forever Young and Forever Clear are different BBL protocols. Your practitioner explains the option appropriate to your visible concerns and skin before proceeding; a named protocol is not a medical diagnosis or a promise of a particular result.
No. A 2013 pilot study by Chang and colleagues examined gene-expression patterns after BBL. It was not a guarantee of individual clinical results or a study of today's HERO device. Your expected cosmetic response is discussed separately.
You may experience redness, warmth, swelling or temporarily darker pigment. Pigment can flake away over about seven to ten days. Your practitioner explains the expected response for your settings and skin.
An initial course of four to six sessions, often around three to four weeks apart, may be discussed. Your skin, concern and response determine the plan. Ask the studio about maintenance instead of assuming an annual or six-month schedule applies to you.
Topaz does not use BBL for melasma. Other pigment concerns and darker skin tones require an individual suitability assessment; tanning and skin type can affect the risk of unwanted pigment changes. An in-person consultation helps determine an appropriate next step.
BBL delivers filtered BroadBand Light to selected pigment and vascular targets. It is not an ablative laser that removes the skin's surface. Redness, swelling and pigment darkening can still occur, so being non-ablative does not mean recovery is always invisible.
